Sandor Seymour of the Special Branch of the British foreign office is sent to investigate the disappearance of Lomax, the British consul in Trieste, a major seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early twentieth century, and finds he must employ both his crime-solving and diplomatic skills when Lomax turns up dead.
