The history wars

Why has the past become a running sore on the national psyche? History is under fire. The History Wars have split academic departments, dominated the opinion pages of the nation's broad sheets, and fuelled a national exercise in self-criticism. Manning Clark was 'exposed' by the Courier Mail as a Soviet agent, and Geoffrey Blainey sparked acrimonious parliamentary debate on immigration, before disappearing into self-imposed academic exile. Robert Manne resigned as editor of Quadrant Magazine in a blaze of controversy when he spoke out in defence of Indigenous Australians. Quadrant magazine has since denied the Stolen Generations and promoted Keith Windschuttle's claims that historians have fabricated the Aboriginal massacres. Successive Prime Ministers, from Gough Whitlam to John Howard, have entered the History Wars and argued publicly for their view of Australia's history.
