Amherst and our family tree
This is a social history of Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire which also includes the family history and genealogy of the Atherton and Means families. James Atherton immigrated before 1650 from England to Massachusetts. Joshua Atherton (1737-1809), a direct descendant in the fifth generation, moved from Harvard, Massachusetts to settle in Amherst, New Hampshire in 1773. In 1774, Robert Means moved to Amherst from Merrimac, New Hampshire; Robert was an immigrant from Belfast, Ireland. David McGregor Means, a son of Robert, married Catharine Atherton. Descendants and relatives lived in New England, New York, Kentucky and elsewhere.
