James Atherton immigrated before 1650 from England to Massachusetts. Joshua Atherton (1737-1809), a direct descendant in the fifth generation, moved from Harvard, Massachusetts to settle in Amherst, New Hampshire in 1773. In 1774, Robert Means moved to Amherst from Merrimac, New Hampshire; Robert was an immigrant from Belfast, Ireland. David McGregor Means, a son of Robert, married Catharine Atherton. Descendants and relatives lived in New England, New York, Kentucky and elsewhere.
