The Keys of paradise

Some powerful and complex painkilling drugs have just been discovered--in a place where you would least expect to find them. Endorphins and their component enkephalins are manufactured in the brain, and perform the same painkilling function as analgesics like morphine. Film explores some physiological mysteries, such as why acupuncture works, and how placebos can relieve symptoms, and shows how endorphins could revolutionize the treatment of pain, depression, and even schizophrenia.

  • "A story of scientific competition and co-operation, the film shows how U.S. and Swedish research into opium addiction led to the discovery of brain receptors for morphine, and the further discovery that the brain contains its own morphine-like chemical, a peptide known as encephalin. Scientists all over the world became involved in this research. A double- blind trial at the Walton Hospital, Liverpool, in which some patients were given a painkiller and others a placebo, followed by a second injection which stopped the effect of the painkiller, found that pain relief continued in the case of the patients who had received the placebo, indicating that the imaginary painkiller caused the brain to produce encephalin. This research may lead to developments in the treatment of schizophrenia, where this is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain."
  • "The discovery of a tiny molecule, enkphalin, proved to be the key of relieving physical and mental pain."@en
  • "An examination of endomorphins and enkephalins, powerful painkillers manufactured by the brain and believed to block pain messages between nerve cells. Scientists, although uncertain about what triggers their release by the brain, have discovered that they're useful for treating depressive and schizophrenic patients."
  • "Describes the recently discovered, powerful and complex painkilling drugs, endorphins, manufactured by the human brain."@en
