Downer-Down : the first book of the Wynding Ways

Set in the Wynding Ways, a dark, twisting world where magical power is rooted in each person's blood and teeth, and where dangers lurk in every cave and crawlspace, this book tells the story of Tieko, a young ex-gang member from Downer-Down. While Tieko's only goal at the start is to find a safe home for herself and her young half-sister, Tig, along with money enough for survival, she soon finds herself caught up in the middle of plots against the ruler of her zone. Tieko is able to destroy the demon worshiping Coal usurper, but she is startled to discover that Tig has been serving as his apprentice.
