The book that inspired the movie JFK recounts Jim Garrison's attempt to solve the Kennedy assassination, and describes how Garrison was harrassed because of his allegations of government involvement in Kennedy's death.
"The day Kennedy was killed, Garrison was busy in his New Orleans DA office. When it was reported that Oswald had spent the summer of '63 in New Orleans, Garrison felt it was his office's duty to track down Oswald's contacts and activities. This lead him to David Ferrie, who it was alleged was supposed to be Oswald's getaway driver. While Garrison dismissed this allegation, Ferrie's activities on the day of the assassination were suspicious enough to warrant further investigation. From David Ferrie, Garrison connects Oswald to Guy Banister, an ex-FBI agent and private investigator. The evidence Garrison gathers compels the reader to conclude Ferrie and Banister were preparing Cuban exiles for another coup against Castro. Garrison touchs upon the shenanigans taking place at Lake Pontchatrain in 1963 where he then links Banister, Ferrie and Clay Shaw to Oswald. Kennedy didn't follow through in the Bay of Pigs invasion; Kennedy was shutting down the CIA training camps; Kennedy brokered a deal during the Cuban missile crisis. From these facts, we obtain Garrison's thesis: members of the covert intelligence of the US government determined Kennedy's failure to prosecute the Cold War vis a vis Truman and Eisenhower was a threat to US security and thus he had to be eliminated."
