  • "... Un Coeur simple, is the uneventful life-story of Felicite who, at sixteen, became a domestic servant in a house at Pont l'Eveque, in Normandy. Her existence centred on her widowed mistress, the widow's children, her own sailor nephew, and a parrot. Time passed, and one after another death robbed her of them. She lived on (till one day, as the Corpus Christi procession was passing, she too died) in the empty, unsold, mouldering house, enfeebled in mind and body, pious as she always had been, but confusing the stuffed parrot before whom she knelt with the Holy Ghost to whom she prayed. La Legende de Saint Julien l'Hospitalier is a medieval tale, jewelled in style like a stained-glass window ... The saint of the legend was a hermit who sought expiation for the blood-lust of his youth, and his crime of parricide, by ferrying people across a dangerous river. One stormy night he was summoned to transport a filth-ridden leper who then demanded the shelter of his hut, and of his bed, and finally the warmth of his naked body ... Julian did all that he was asked, and the air became filled with sweetness, the roof disappeared as the firmament opened, and he found himself being carried to heaven in the arms of his Lord. Herodias is a sensuously ornate, yet realistic, evocation of a Biblical past and the worlds of Judaea and Rome. Herod the tetrarch and Herodias are feasting the proconsul Vitellius. The imprecations of the captive John the Baptist are heard from the cistern in the background. Salome dances, and receives his head as her reward. Later it is discarded, objet lugubre, among the reamains of the banquet. It is retrieved by three of John's disciples whe set out, carrying it, in the direction of Galilee.
