Auf seiner Reise quer durch den europäischen Kontinent stoppt er in Städten wie Oslo, Paris, Brüssel, Aachen, Köln, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Kopenhagen, Stockholm, Rom, Neapel, Florenz und Mailand. Auch der Schweiz, Österreich, Jugoslawien und der Türkei stattet er einen Besuch ab. Er besucht sogar das Fürstentum Liechtenstein. Mit seinen Sprachkenntnissen, die rein auf Englisch basieren, begegnet er allen Situationen gelassen. Ob er den selbstmörderischen Pariser Motorradfahrern mutig trotzt, sich von Zigeunern ausrauben lässt, der Versuchung widersteht in Deutschland in einem Restaurant Eingeweide und Tieraugen zu bestellen, durch die Sexläden der Reeperbahn bummelt oder sich auf eine Diskussion über seine Hotelrechnung in Kopenhagen einlässt, Bryson sieht sich alle Sehenswürdigkeiten an, seziert mit scharfem Blick die jeweilige Kultur und durchleuchtet jeden Platz und jede Person mit seinen überaus witzigen und sarkastischen Bemerkungen. Bill Bryson wurde 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa, geboren. 1977 zog er nach Grossbritannien und schrieb dort mehrere Jahre u. a. für die 'Times' und den 'Independent'. Mit seinem Englandbuch 'Reif für die Insel' gelang Bryson der Durchbruch, und heute ist er in England der erfolgreichste Sachbuchautor der Gegenwart. Seine Bücher werden in viele Sprachen übersetzt, stürmen stets die internationalen Bestsellerlisten. 1996 kehrte Bill Bryson mit seiner Familie in die USA zurück, wo es ihn jedoch nicht lange hielt. Er war erneut 'Reif für die Insel', wo er heute wieder lebt."
