Little murders

A caustic black comedy based on cartoonist Jules Feiffer's off-Broadway play about the effects of rising random violence, both emotional and physical, on the New York middle-class of the 1960s. Feiffer presents New York as a metropolis where social order has broken down and violent crime is so commonplace that nobody notices anymore. The story centres on the relationship between an interior decorator who is an eternal optimist, and the apathetic, emotionally bankrupt photographer she rescues after he has been mugged. The woman sets out to mould her newfound lover into an ideal mate but her efforts are thwarted by the irrational behaviour of those around her. Filled with bizarre caricatures of authority figures, the film concludes that the only way to deal with the alienation bought about by the 'little murders' committed on the soul on a daily basis, is to fully engage with the insanity of urban life.
