  • "Pierre Monteux (1875-1964) was one of the pivotal figures in 20th-century music, having led the world premiere performances of such masterpieces as Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps and Petrouchka, and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé. Born in Paris, Monteux studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory and went on th play viola with the orchestras of Colonne and the Opéra-Comique. It was also in Paris that he founded several performance series."
