"Summary: An enactment of the short story by Joseph Conrad. Set in 1880 on a sailing ship in the Gulf of Siam, it tells of a young, inexperienced sea captain and his encounter with a man called Leggatt, a fugitive from naval justice, who becomes the "secret sharer" of his cabin. Identifying with Leggatt and preoccupied with hiding him, the captain isolates himself from his crew, finally placing them and his ship in danger in order to let the fugitive escape. At the same time it is through his identification with Leggatt, whom he sees as his alter ego, that the captain gains the confidence to accept his responsibilities and assumes full command of the ship. The role of the captain is taken by David Soul, one of the stars of television's popular "Starsky and Hutch"."
