In the summer of 1997, Alec Valentine has returned to his childhood home to care for his terminally ill mother Alice. His elder brother Larry is also planning to visit from California, where both his acting career and marriage are failing. In contrast, Lázló Lázár, a Hungarian émigré in Paris (whose play Alec is translating) appears to lead a charmed life. For all four, the time has come to take stock and reflect on risks taken and opportunities lost.
