Jack Maggs

Jack Maggs is based on the criminal character of Abel Magwitch, created by Charles Dickens in Great Expectations. Carey retells the story of Magwitch who Dickens had banished to Australia for the 'term of his natural life'. However, Maggs, who is Magwitch's alter ego, breaks his sentence and returns to England, where he claims to have 'English business to settle'. The story of Jack Maggs is Carey's speculation on events which might have caused Charles Dickens to invent Great Expectations. By telling a story which overlaps and intersects with Dickens, Carey is able to claim Dickens' London for his own. In the hands of a consummate wordsmith such as Carey this is a thrilling experience.
