On the morning of an important job interview Kate Weyland looses an earring she believes to be her lucky charm. Running late, she asks her husband to drive their seven-year-old twin daughters to school. On their way there, the three of them are killed in a horrendous car accident. Grieving and guilt-stricken, Kate latches on to what a nurse had said about her witnessing her own daughter's passing and the idea that she can somehow establish contact with her deceased family. When she takes a trip to Nantucket, she hears of the mysterious Gabriel Farr, the town medium who is able to communicate with the dead. The channeling attempts prove to be so cathartic for Kate that she soon starts an intense affair with the hypnotic Gabriel. But who is he really? And what are his motives? Kate becomes suspicious that it all might be a cruel sham.
