Professor Immanuel Rath (Emil Jannings), a respectable, stuffy college professor, becomes infatuated with Lola-Lola (Marlene Dietrich), a cabaret singer. He marries her but she deceives and humiliates him and leads to his degradation and ruin. This role has Dietrich introduce the song "Falling in love again" and made her an international star.
