Cold Paradise

Stone Barrington, the ex-cop turned lawyer-private investigator, returns in an adventure that brings back old friends and enemies. When millionaire Thad Shames asks Barrington to go to Palm Beach to track down a mysterious woman he met at a party, Barrington sees the mission as little more than a wild goose chase. But quarters on Shames' yacht and the company of Shames' attractive assistant, Callie, sweeten the deal, and Barrington agrees to take the case. To his surprise, it doesn't take long to find the woman, but it's an even bigger shock to him to discover that she is Allison Manning, now calling herself Liz, whom he helped when she was accused of killing her husband (Dead in the Water, 1997). That husband is still very much alive, and Liz wants to pay him to leave her alone with some of the money from the insurance scam they pulled off together. But finding him turns out to be much harder, although it seems apparent that he's in town when Liz's house is vandalized. Barrington calls on his old partner, Dino, for help with the search, and together they zero in on a likely suspect. But is he the man? Even Liz isn't sure.
