"Beschrieben werden Alexanders Herkunft in Makedonien, seine Eroberungszüge bis nach Indien, das alltägliche Leben auf den Schlachtfeldern und sein Tod in Babylon. Aber auch die Verbreitung der griechischen Kultur (Bibliothek von Alexandria) und die Nachwirkungen des Makedonen in der Geschichte (Diadochenreiche, das Bild Alexanders im Islam und Christentum) werden gebührend erwähnt. Ein Kapitel über die Entdeckung von Philipps Grab (Alexanders Vater) sowie ein Register schließen den Band ab. Entsprechend der Reihengestaltung nehmen die Illustrationen einen breiten Raum ein, der Text verkommt häufig zur reinen Bildunterschrift. Die Rekonstruktionszeichnungen, Fotos und Abbildungen bekannter Kunstwerke (Mosaiken, Gemälde) sind sehr beeindruckend und detailreich. Meines Wissens bisher das zweite Werk über Alexander den Großen. Die Darstellung von P. Briant: 'Alexander, Eroberer der Welt' (BA 12/90) wendet sich an Jugendliche ab 14. Daher wird das vorliegende Buch allen (Schul-)Bibliotheken zusätzlich empfohlen."
