He who fears the wolf

A boy arrives - breathless and aghast - at his police station, to report the discovery of a horribly maimed body. The village misfit, who has been committed to a psychiatric clinic, was seen at the edge of the woods nearby. The next morning a bank in the nearby town is robbed at gunpoint. The gunman takes a hostage and flees. As his plans begin to come apart he, unlike his pacific hostage, rapidly loses control. Meanwhile the search for the killer has developed into a straightforward manhunt. Overwhelmingly, suspicion is directed at Errki Johrma, the young man who has run away from the clinic. Only Erriki's doctor will not believe him cabable of such a crime.

  • "Gripping psychological thriller. The redoubtable Inspector Sejer investigates two crimes ; the witnesses and suspects are of questionable psychological integrity, and the crimes become interwoven as a schizophrenic suspect, a violent robber and an archery-obsessed youth are drawn into the maelstrom."
  • "Inspector Sejer is hard at work again, investigating the brutal murder of a woman who lived alone in the middle of the woods. The chief suspect is another loner, a schizophrenic recently escaped from a mental institution. The only witness is a twelve-year-old boy, overweight, obsessed with archery, and a resident at a home for delinquents. When a demented man robs a nearby bank and accidentally takes the suspect hostage, the three mistfits are drawn into an uneasy alliance. Shrewdly, patiently, Inspector Sejer confronts a case where the strangeness of the crime is matched only by the strangemess of the criminals, and where small-town prejudices warp every piece of information he tries to collect."@en
  • "A twelve-year-old boy runs wildly into his local police station claiming to have seen Halldis Horn's brutally murdered corpse. Errki Johrma, an escaped psychiatric patient and known town misfit, was sighted at the scene disappearing into the woods. The next morning the local bank is robbed at gunpoint. Making his escape the robber takes a hostage and flees and, once again, a suspect takes to the woods. As the felon's plans begin to fall apart he is, in contrast to his quiet hostage, rapidly losing his control and power. Meanwhile the search for Halldis Horn's killer continues. All fingers of suspicion point to Errki - except one. Errki's doctor refuses to believe that he could have committed such an horrific act and, for the first time since his wife's death, the quiet Inspector finds himself intrigued by another woman. Despite all assumptions a lack of concrete evidence holds back the case to convict Errki for murder. But in a novel that will keep you desperate to turn each new page to find out more, Fossum brilliantly ensures that things are rarely as they would at first appear. From the deeply sympathetic policeman to the social outcast of Errki and the bank robber thoroughly unsuited to his profession, Fossum writes from within the minds of her characters with great lucidity - but she never gives too much away."@en
