An inspector calls

This three-act drama takes place on a single night in 1912, and focuses on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live comfortably in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands." One evening, a man calling himself Inspector Goole visits the Birlings. He questions them about the suicide of a young working-class woman, Eva Smith (also known as Daisy Renton). Under interrogation over the course of the evening, the various family members are revealed to have each been responsible for an element of the young woman's death. This SmartPass audio guide combines a full-cast dramatization of the text with historical background, analysis, and a biographical sketch of the author to help students develop, express, and support their own ideas with confidence. It also offers advice and tips on planning and studying for exams and coursework.
