Orpheus Orphée

This version of a poet obsessed with the unattainable, is considered one of Jean Cocteau's best films: his adaptation of the legend of Orpheus tells the story of a successful French poet, Orphee, who falls in love with the Princess (Death). In the process of relating the tragedy, Cocteau draws two distinct worlds - the real and the magical - and convinces us of the reality of both. The film has been hailed by many critics as a truly unique experience.

  • "In this modern account of the Orpheus myth, Orphée is a celebrated poet, and his "death" is represented by a mysterious princess who commands as her lethal agents two motor-cyclists, while the Bacchantes have been transformed into a group of militant feminists. Death is a spy who falls in love with Orphée and condemns herself in order to save the man she is duty-bound to destroy."
  • "Modern account of the Orpheus myth dealing with narcissism and with the portrayal of the poet as one torn between the real world and that of the spirit and imagination."
  • "A drama of images that resemble the vagrant phantasms of sleep. While the famed legend of Orpheus provides the framework of a plot and the pictoral character is concrete, the context is utterly abstract."
  • "Based of Cocteau's first play, this is derived from the Orpheus legend and Eurydice, their involvement with Death, the angel Heurtebise, Cégeste and bacchantes. French with English subtitles."
  • ""Depicts the love of a poet for a princess who travels constantly from this world to the next. A legendary tale in a modern Parisian setting"--Video source book."
