In Rückblenden entsteht das immer schärfer werdende Bild einer Familientragödie, die fast fünfzig Jahre zuvor, als Estland von den Russen besetzt wurde, ihren Höhepunkt fand. Rivalität und Eifersucht, Scham, Schutzbedürftigkeit und vor allem Angst vor der Brutalität der Männer gegenüber den Frauen - das sind die Motive, die Aliide zu unvorstellbaren Entscheidungen zwangen. Sofi Oksanen gelang mit diesem Roman, der in mehr als 25 Ländern erscheint und gerade in den USA gefeiert wird, der große Wurf.
