  • ""The Lebanon has experienced a greater diversity of international peacekeeping activity than any other state in recent times. This book offers a unique analysis of the Arab Deterrent Force (ADF), which was established by the League of Arab States in 1976 with a mandate to help end the civil strife in the Lebanon. The author describes the evolution, powers, functions, and structure of the Arab League, and examines the history of the Lebanon prior to the outbreak of civil war in 1975. Subsequent chapters analyze the origins, composition, funding, command structure, legal basis and performance of the ADF, and consider whether the ADF was a genuine peacekeeping operation. The author concludes that, despite certain distinctive characteristics, the ADF should be viewed as a peacekeeping force. He argues, further, that although the ADF failed to execute its mandate, the ADF's role in the Lebanon merits careful study for the insights it yields concerning the limits of effectiveness of regional organizations, such as the Arab League, in conflict management"--Page 4 of cover."
