The Leopard Il Gattopardo

Set in the 1860s during the years of the Risorgimento - the making of modern Italy - which saw the emergence of the bourqeoisie at the expense of the landed aristocracy. Visconti clearly identified with Don Fabrizio ('the Leopard'), the ageing patriarch of an aristocratic Sicilian family. He is the first to understand the inevitability of the changes. 'If everything is to remain the same, everything must change' is the cynical observation of Don Fabrizio's young nephew, Tancredi, who adjusts to the new order in a manner impossible for Fabrizio. Lampedusa's novel, steeped in lethargy and inertia, was filmed by Visconti in the enervating Sicilian summer. The film culminates in the ball scene which stands as a kind of metaphor for transformiso - the emergence of a new order as reactionary as the old.

(Quelle: Covertext)."
  • "Luchino Visconti's The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) is an epic on the grandest possible scale. The film recreates, with nostalgia, drama, and opulence, the tumultuous years of Italy's Risorgimento-when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle classes rose and formed a unified, democratic Italy. Burt Lancaster stars as the aging prince watching his culture and fortune wane in the face of a new generation, represented by his upstart nephew and his beautiful fiancee."
