Civil War veteran cabinet card

Cabinet card portrait of Wisconsin Governor George W. Peck, a resident of Delavan, Wisconsin who served with the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry during the Civil War. The picture shows Peck wearing a suit with a pin on his necktie and is signed by Peck. Peck was born in Henderson, New York in 1840 and moved to Wisconsin in 1843. He enlisted with Company L, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry in 1863, and was transferred to Company E in 1865 before being mustered out of service in 1866. After the war, Peck worked as a newspaperman and settled in Milwaukee around 1878. He became active in politics and served two terms as governor of Wisconsin from 1891 to 1895. Peck died in 1916 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee. The picture was taken by Sutter of Milwaukee.
