  • "This program begins at the 1893 Chicago world's fair. For the 27 million visitors it was a window into nearly unimaginable changes to come. Like a virtual department store, where everything is bigger and better, the fair showcased numerous products of progress, like a 22,000-pound block of cheese, and the world's largest cannon--measuring more than 43 feet in length and weighing 132 tons. Measurements were all the rage and numbers were even defining standards of beauty as scientists compiled the measurements of 40,000 college students, later used by artists to create statues of the ideal man and woman. As told through the eyes of historians, William Cronon, Ben Wattenberg, John Milton Cooper, and Seymour Martin Lipsets, this program examines the onset of American statistics, revealing the power of data and its impact on daily life, government, and the vision for the future. A part of the series The First Measured Century. Distributed by PBS Distribution. (60 minutes) A streaming videorecording."
