When Lucy's family is plunged into poverty, she is forced to become a housemaid for the Hetherington's. When their son, Clive, returns home from university, he and Lucy strike up an immediate bond. Clive however decides to volunteer to fight in the Spanish Civil War. As Lucy tends his wounds, the two fall in love, but war is approaching.
