This book is an investigation of how various enterprises in the Russian province of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) have responded to the fundamental changes which Russia has experienced over the last decade, and is based primarily on interviews with local managers and other decision-makers. The changes have affected the political and economic systems and the everyday life of Russia's citizens. The book presents the background to these changes and focuses on the regional impact of the transition to capitalism and the market. Case-studies of industrial, military and retailing companies and SMEs explore the impact of change and the variety of managerial responses. The case-study evidence is related to general trends and developments in the economy. The book concludes with an analysis of the findings and it questions the future development of Russian companies in a situation of tension between the resilience of the past and enormous pressures for change.
