Imagines

This volume presents kindred works important for evidence relating to late Greek art. They are attributed to two men each known as Philostratus and to a third man called Callistratus, otherwise unknown. To an elder Philostratus, the Lemnian, born ca. AD 190, junior kinsman of the Philostratus who wrote the Life of Apollonius of Tyana and Lives of the Sophists, is attributed the series of 65 'Eikones' or 'Imagines', descriptions (in two books) ostensibly of paintings in a gallery at Naples. A younger Philostratus, apparently his grandson, is credited with 17 similar descriptions. The 14 'Ekphraseis' attributed to Callistratus are descriptions of statues in stone and bronze, written probably in the fourth century AD. It is not known to what extent the descriptions are of real works of art, but they show how artists treated their subjects, and are written with some artistic knowledge. Yet rhetorical skill dominates: these pieces were written to display the writers' powers of descriptions. -- jacket.

  • "Sixty-five descriptions, ostensibly of paintings in a gallery at Naples, are credited to an Elder Philostratus (born c. 190 CE); to a Younger Philostratus, apparently his grandson, seventeen similar descriptions. Fourteen descriptions of statues in stone or bronze attributed to Callistratus were probably written in the fourth century CE."@en
  • "In this volume we present kindred works important as evidence relating to late Greek art and attributed to two men each known as Philostratus and to a third man called Callistratus, otherwise unknown. Of the pair, to an elder Philostratus, the Lemnian, born c. A.D. 190 son of Nervianus and junior kinsman of a Philostratus The Athenian (who wrote a Life of Apollonius of Tyana -- Loeb Nos. 16 and 17 and Lives of the Sophists -- Loeb No. 134) are attributed the series of 65 'Eikones', 'Imagines', Likeness, in fact descriptions (in two books) ostensibly of paintings in a gallery at Naples; and, to his grandson apparently, a younger Philostratus 17 more Descriptions surviving out of a larger total. The 14 'Ekphraseis' narratives attributed to Callistratus are descriptions of statues in stone and bronze, written probably in the fourth century A.D. All three men were Greek sophists (Professors) whose descriptions are lectures or rhetorical exercises purposely displaying the writers powers of description of scenes and sentiment and storytelling, and providing models for pupils and stimulating imagination and contemporary taste in art."
  • "It is not known to what extent the descriptions are of real works of art, but they show how artists treated their subjects, and are written with some artistic knowledge and largely in pleasant language. Yet rhetorical skill, though working sincerely on themes in art, dominates over serious art-criticism. The elder Philostratus, impressed by illusion of reality in painting, prefers paintings inspired by literary sources and mythology (and history) and goes beyond what the paintings show. There are illustrations of epic, tragic, and lighter styles in painting, and much special knowledge of interesting things is displayed. The younger Philostratus is like his grandfather but strives less for rhetorical effect and does not bring in unusual knowledge. He has a theory of the painters functions but is impressed not by illusion of reality in general but by representation of persons in particular. Callistratus knew his predecessors work, travelled much, and apparently saw statues which he describes. In each case, avoiding rhetorical devices, he gives a few details and then praises the artist. -- JACKET"
