"The Grande Chartreuse, considered one of the world's most ascetic monasteries is based in the French Alps. In 1984, German filmmaker Philip Gröning wrote to the Carthusian order for permission to make a documentary about them. They said they would get back with him. Sixteen years later, they were ready. Gröning, sans crew or artificial lighting, lived in the monks' quarters for six months - filming their daily prayers, tasks, rituals, and rare outdoor excursions."
"As a young filmmaker, Philip Gröning approached the Prior of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery, located high in the French Alps, to inquire whether he might make a documentary of their lives. 16 years later, they answered, and this film is the result with the only conditions being that there should be no artificial lighting used, no other crew, no music and no commentary. What Gröning has produced under these conditions is an intimate and almost wordless portrait of an ordered, cloistered world, in which the monastery itself and the monks' daily tasks set the rhythm and structure of the film. It is a film like no other and has won numerous prizes worldwide."
