  • "On May 3rd 1954, as the battle of Dien Bien Phu is reaching its end, the 317th Platoon of auxiliary Laotian soldiers receive the order to retreat. The platoon is formed of four French and 41 Laotians under their command. The order is to reach the entrenched camp of Dien Bien Phu ; 8 days later, the platoon will be destroyed, Dien Bien Phu will have fallen. Schoendoerffer follows the men through the jungle as they are slowly annihilated in ambushes, in attacks, and by diseases. He captures the inarticulate anguish and solitude of each man trying to survive and of two in particular - a veteran sargeant to whom battle is a way of life, - and a young French officer fresh from military school. Their impersonal, hierarchical and rather hostile relationship becomes an unlikely friendship."
  • ""In 1954, the Indochina War begins to come to a close following France's defeat by the Viet Minh at the deadly Battle of Dîen Bîen Phû. French forces are in full retreat and risk being overrun at every turn -- including the 317th Platoon, a unit of French soldiers and Laotian allies who are led by the idealistic but inexperienced sous-lieutenant Torrens and adjutant Willsdorf, a former soldier in the German Wehrmacht during WWII. Their survival depends on completing a trek through the dense, jungle-laden, expanse of enemy territory that stands between them and the safety of the nearest French outpost." --IMDb website."
