A Feasibility Study of the Sat Performance of High-Ability Students from1960 to 1974 (Valedictorian Study)

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (sat) scores of the 1960 to 1974 valedictorians and salutatorians from a sample of public, experimental, and private schools were studied. The experimental schools were specifically chosen for demographic stability. The comparison schools were also selected for stability, but by less stringent criteria. For the students from the experimental schools, there was no evidence of a decline in either sat verbal or mathematics scores. Instead, the trend has been toward very modest annual increases. For the comparison group, the data indicated an initial period of increase, followed by a decline. Each of these two special samples differed significantly from the SAT-taking population. The scores of the private school students, however, showed a decline similar to the total sat population. This study supports the view that the score decline is a consequence of social change and social forces, but cannot establish this as a conclusion.
