Memorial for the booksellers of Edinburgh and Glasgow, relating to the process against them by some of the London booksellers; which depended before the Court of Session, and is now under appeal

An early document in the battle between the London booksellers and those in Scotland who sought to break the effective monopoly of the London trade. The Edinburgh publisher and bookseller Donaldson, represented, among others, by James Boswell, took the fight against perpetual copyright to the courts and eventually won a decision (Donaldson v. Becket, 1774) which still forms the basis of all English and American copyright acts. This memorial sets forth the case of the Edinburgh booksellers.
