  • "American artists faced increasing competition from foreign and domestic sources from 1850-1910. Many Americans chose art as a viable career option, and after the Civil War paintings from abroad streamed into the United States in great numbers. To be financially successful, artists needed to adapt the way they did business. Previous to 1850, artists had mostly sold work on commission, through the National Academy of Design, and at auction. After 1850, artists turned to art dealers; formed secessionist groups to hold small scale, tightly focused exhibitions; and showed work through nationwide circuit of exhibition spaces in an attempt to gain or maintain prosperous careers. In the process, many adapted their styles to appeal to specific constituencies of art consumers."
  • "For the most part American artists were successful. They saw prices for their work rise throughout the period, even though the nineteenth century saw deflationary trends for most consumer goods. In addition to surveying the art market as a whole, this dissertation tracks the careers of three artists: Winslow Homer, Albert Bierstadt, and Worthington Whittredge to understand how their business strategies affected their careers and subsequent reputations. Homer constantly adapted his style to suit the needs of his audience. Bierstadt eschewed his peers, and instead worked to become part of his patrons' social and economic lives, which helped him remain financially successful throughout his career. Worthington Whittredge worked to make the National Academy a strong professional organization that would protect the interests of American artists, but ultimately failed in this endeavor."
