Here, there, elsewhere : stories from the road

In this collection of short writings selected by him from 30 years of magazine articles, the author draws together for the first time his greatest short-form travel writing including his funny and touching adventures in Japan, England, Italy, Mexico, Long Island, Oregon, Arizona, and more. In these pages we find him beside the Sea of Japan, sitting with men whose memories of war are both fresh and ancient; searching for the real Yoknapatawpha County; pondering the disappearance of twenty-seven ancient Mayan scrolls and the broader meaning of extinction; investigating the oddities of Long Island, New York; and recalling the infiltration of Thanksgiving dinner by a possible eyeball belonging to a half-blind Indian. Looking beyond the roads familiar, we encounter him searching for rare books and lost moments on the England-Wales border; conveyed by the Delta Queen down the great Mississippi River; heading beyond Poker Jim Ridge in rural Oregon in search of desert and desertion; exploring prehistoric monuments on the Orkney Islands in Scotland, and everywhere throwing away his compass as all true wanderers should. He even eats a smoked cisco.
