Joshua Hilary Hudson was born in 1832 at Chester, South Carolina, the son of Dabney Hudson (1801-1836) and Narcissa Cook Hudson. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1852. He married Mary Miller, daughter of Phillip Miller, at Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1854. They had five children. He taught school, practiced law, and was a judge. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 26th South Carolina Infantry Regiment which fought at the Battle of the Crater, at or near Petersburg, Virginia.
