KS3 geography. Thinking skills

Thinking skills are believed to enhance student performance by using activities that are considered to be more challenging in terms of the thinking required of pupils. But they can be daunting to use, particularly for student teachers. Using footage from one of his own KS3 Geography lessons Paul Ticehurst, an Advanced Skills Teacher, works with student teachers to analyse the problems and positive aspects of incorporating thinking skills into a lesson.

  • "Thinking skills are at the centre of AST Paul Ticehurst's lessons. Exploring the issue of refugees in a KS3 Geography lesson he illustrates how the strategies of "mind-movies" and "reading" photographs can help students learn. Mind movies are seen as a great way of accessing children's knowledge. To work well an excellent teacher-pupil relationship is thought to be needed and pupils must learn to take their own knowledge seriously. "Mind movies" particularly appeal to pupils who learn best with visual and auditory stimuli and for the teacher they can be a highly flexible teaching tool. Paul's class illustrates that thinking skills can be an exciting way of encouraging students to think for themselves and to analyse not just what they are learning but how they are learning as well."@en
