  • "The logbook of the brig William Jones, of the U.S.S. Potomac, details a voyage from Rio de Janeiro to Benguilla [i.e. Benguela] Bay, Angola, and back (May 1841-Sept. 1841). Home port was [New York]; master was [W.E. Newcomb]. It is a daily log that describes wind, weather, location, passenger traffic, sightings of ships, the flogging of a crew member for sleeping on his watch, the visit of a health officer, handling cargo, and maintenance of the ship. It also describes the deaths of two men who were stranded in Benguella after being forced to leave the brig "Sophia," and rescued by the brig William Jones. The brig was sold after this voyage in Rio de Janeiro and the author boarded the bark Globe as first mate, bound for Philadelphia. Log does not continue while in port at Benguela. Bound with U.S.S. Columbus, brig Charles, ship Azelia, and bark Globe. Includes index."
