The journal kept aboard the ship Herald details a voyage from Boston to Calcutta and back (June 1868 to Mar. 1869). Log does not continue in port. Home port was Salem, Mass.; owner was [Henry Gardner?]; master and log keeper was John W. Beckford. It is a partial daily log that describes wind, weather, location, shipboard occupations, sightings of ships, sailors, lunar observations, sightings of animals, and shipboard illness. It includes a copy of a May 1868 letter from Gardner to Beckford instructing him to make the voyage.
