""Nous sommes peu enclins à considérer une sculpture antique comme un produit de consommation déterminé par un certain marché. Pourtant, l'analyse des procédes de fabrication mis en rapport avec ce que nous savons des commanditaires, montre à quel point les sculpteurs se sont adaptés à des situations variées, au IIe siècle après J.-C., à Rome et à Tivoli, en ce qui nous concerne ici. Les options très différentes retenues pour le choix des modèles et leur traduction dans le marbre, ont dépendu en grande partie des clients, comme le degré d'élaboration des sculptures jusqu'au traitement de la surface. Toutefois, dans le cas des œuvres les plus élaborées, réalisées dans des contextes impériaux, les variations ne se sont pas manifestées dans le choix de systèmes de traduction, toujours extrêmement précis. Elles concernent plutôt les mesures qui déterminèrent des proportions différentes, le traitement des détails et de la surface. Les empereurs ont favorisé certaines manières d'ateliers qui leur ont plu particulièrement. C'est une situation très diverse que nous observons dans le cas des commandes non impériales : le plus souvent, on n'achetait pas une sculpture pour se faire plaisir, il s'agissait de répondre à des obligations ou de respecter des convenances. Les mentions de prix, même modestes, soulignent l'importance accordées à de telles commandes. Ces inscriptions temoignent aussi de la grande variété des dépenses et il est tentant de les attribuer au travail des sculpteurs qui réalisèrent des œuvres plus ou moins coûteuses en fonction des moyens financiers de leurs clients. Si la copie précise et raffinée était réservée aux plus fortunés, ceux-ci ont toutefois parfois acquis des œuvres dont l'élaboration montre des lacunes. Et inversement, une famille modeste aura fait une dépense exceptionnelle pour obtenir le portrait d'un proche très ressemblant (avec l'intervention d'un spécialiste des empreintes et la réalisation d'un modèle intermédiaire). Mais fréquemment, et surtout à Rome où les possibilités de trouver un atelier ou un marchand adapté à ses ressources ne manquaient pas, le degré d'élaboration d'une sculpture et sa facture donnent des indications sur le statut social du client comme sur ses goûts."--Publisher's website."
