Streep discusses her childhood and family; her childhood vocal studies; attending Vassar College where she acted in plays; her studies at Yale Drama School; moving to New York City, where she appeared in seven plays her first year. Streep speaks of her lack of a definable acting technique; how she approaches a character; and her major film roles as Joanna Kramer in the 1979 Kramer vs. Kramer, opposite Dustin Hoffman, as Sophie Zawistowski in the 1982 motion picture Sophie's choice, as Karen Blixen in the 1985 motion picture Out of Africa; and lastly, as Kate "Kit" Mundy in the 1998 motion picture Dancing at Lughnasa. The discussion is illustrated with clips form Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's choice, Out of Africa, and Dancing at Lughnasa. Streep speaks also about women and the acting profession, and what she sees as valuable about the her chosen field.
