Monticello Project Database design Encoded Archival Description records

This article addresses the construction of a database for the Monticello Project containing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) records. Two principal design philosophies were used in the construction: make the data as accessible as possible and keep the returned records as small as possible. All of the work described was done using the standard OCLC tools (sgmlconv, the database-building programs, and WebZ) supplemented with OCLC's tool. Fred, developed by the Office of Research, is a general purpose tool for analyzing and manipulating SGML data. This project was a follow-on to the project reported in the Annual Review of OCLC Research--1996, "The Monticello Project: Design Considerations for a Virtual Library.
