"The American Civil War fascinated Stephen Crane from early in his life. He wrote about the war in a way that few others had, stripping away the romance and politics to focus intensely on the reality that soldiers faced. This volume contains six perfectly formed stories that explore the conflict. He chose the title of the collection intentionally. During the Civil War, the regiment was the primary organizing unit, typically made up of friends and neighbors from the same community. Focusing on this small group, rather than the larger war or a specific battle, allowed Crane to explore the human costs of the war in a way that most other authors neglected. The phrase "little regiment" suggests a regiment that has lost a large number of soldiers during battle."@en
