"This study of Wade Hampton I represents an effort to delineate one man's successful struggle to improve his economic status. Hampton is perhaps the best representative, although much more dramatic than others, of a group of 'new leaders' in South Carolina who illustrate the fluidity of Carolina society during the late eighteenth century ... In addition to examining Wade Hampton's rise to political, economic, and social prominence, this study will also attempt to provide answers to specific questions concerning the method and manner of upward mobility in South Carolina. The economic rank of the early Hamptons, the sources of Wade Hampton's wealth, the relationship between wealth and social and political status, and the fate of the family fortune after the death of Wade Hampton I are a few of the other questions which will be explored"--Page viii-ix.
