However, they face a life of poverty and Tomoko is sold as a child geisha while in elementary school. At age 17 Tomoko is reunited with her mother again who is as selfish as before. Tomoko meets a man named Ezaki and hopes to marry him one day. She buys a geisha house, but it is destroyed in the Kanto earthquake. She later manages to open a small hotel in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo. Her dream of marrying Ezaki is ruined when he finds out that her mother is a prostitute and they break up."
