A special new Introduction by the author highlights this reissue of a classic science fiction novel that changed the way people looked at the stars--and themselves. 2001: A Space Odyssey is the classic science fiction novel that changed the way we looked at the stars and ourselves. 2001: A Space Odyssey inspired what is perhaps the greatest science fiction film ever made--brilliantly imagined by the late Stanley Kubrick ... 2001 is finally here.

"On the moon an enigma is uncovered. So great are the implications of the discovery that, for the first time, men are sent out deep into the solar system. But before they can reach their destination, things begin to go wrong. Horribly wrong."
"Allegory about humanity's exploration of the universe, and the universe's reaction to humanity. This is the classic science fiction novel that changed the way we looked at the stars and ourselves. Odyssey inspired what is perhaps the greatest science fiction film ever made--brilliantly imagined by the late Stanley Kubrick. A special new Introduction by the author, Foreword to the Millennial edition, highlights this reissue."@en
"The classic science fiction novel that changed the way we looked at the stars and ourselves. From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man ventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other. This allegory about humanity's exploration of the universe and the universe's reaction to humanity was the basis for director Stanley Kubrick's immortal film, and lives on as a landmark achievement in storytelling. - Back cover."
"The spacecraft Discovery is on the voyage to the outer edge of the solar system. Within the craft are two increasingly frightened navigators, three frozen hibernauts, and a computer named Hal."@en

"The year is 2001, and cosmonauts uncover a mysterious monolith that has been buried on the Moon for at least three million years. To their astonishment, the monolith releases an equally mysterious pulse?a kind of signal?in the direction of Saturn after it is unearthed. Whether alarm or communication, the human race must know what the signal is?and who it was intended for. -- -- 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Odyssey II, have been adapted into films that still stand as classic examples of the genre. Without a doubt, Arthur C. Clarke is one of the most important voices in contemporary science fiction literature."@en
"A crystal monolith left on the moon by an alien intelligence is the only clue to guide this probe of an ultimate mystery of the universe. Within the craft are two increasingly fightened navigators, three frozen hibernauts, and a talkative computer named Hal, whose conversation and behaviour becomes increasingly bizarre."@en
"Accompanied by a navigator, three deep-freeze hibernauts, and the computer that guides him, David Bowman sets out in the spaceship Discovery to investigate a planet that may be inhabited by alien creatures."@en
"Two astronauts find their journey into space and their very lives jeopardized by the jealousy of an extraordinary computer named Hal."@en
"When an enigmatic monolith is found buried on the moon, scientists are amazed to discover that it's at least 3 million years old. Even more amazing, after it's unearthed the artifact releases a powerful signal aimed at Saturn. What sort of alarm has been triggered? To find out, a manned spacecraft, the Discovery, is sent to investigate. Its crew is highly trained--the best--and they are assisted by a self-aware computer, the ultra-capable HAL 9000. But HAL's programming has been patterned after the human mind a little too well. He is capable of guilt, neurosis, even murder, and he controls every single one of Discovery's components. The crew must overthrow this digital psychotic if they hope to make their rendezvous with the entities that are responsible not just for the monolith, but maybe even for human civilization."

"An object is found on the moon. Who made it? Men travel into space to find out - a billion kilometers to the rings of Saturn. Something ist waiting for them."

"When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate on "the proverbial intelligent science fiction film," it's a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel," 2001 is a visual tone poem (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the film's opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the "star child" at film's end, Kubrick's vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping with the director's underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. (The director also leaves the meaning of the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion.) This theme, in part, is what makes 2001 a film like no other, though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time, Kubrick's film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling, provocative, and perfect."@en

"Behind every man now alive stand 30 ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living. Roughly 100 billion human beings have walked the planet Earth. Amazing that there are appromimately 100 billion stars in our local universe, the Milky Way."
"It is the odyssey of the spacecraft Discovery, hurtling its human voyagers through a fantastic passage of stars toward a confrontation with an unknown intelligence."
