Papers and photographs

Scattered copy print photographs and papers concerning the military service of Farrington Daniels Jr. including his World War II commission in the Army Medical Corps Neurosurgery Service and his later service with the Army Quartermaster (1950-1955) which included work on environmental physiology, nuclear warfare, and design of military clothing and equipment during the Korean War. The photographs in this collection document different life periods beginning with a unique Christmas picture of his father wearing a WWI gas mask and holding Daniels as a baby. Two photographs concern his time in 1946 on the SS Seastar, a troop transport vessel. There are also two photos of lifelong friend Dan Turner and one of the Dane County Farmer's Market on the opening day of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in its new location. Paper documents consist of various military travel records, his separation record, and several letters written by Daniels either concerning his military service or providing reminiscences of such. Included is a humorous discussion of news from Lawson General Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia) in 1945, a reminiscence of the battles of Midway and Leyte Gulf, and a 1985 letter responding to a government call concerning radiation exposure. A letter (1952) written to Daniels by "Fred" from Yuma Test Station (Arizona) discusses nuclear testing procedures and protective body armor. There is also a letter (1942) written to Daniels by close friend Bob Morse who was later declared missing in action when his plane was lost over Holland. A 1988 letter written to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum by Daniels provides further context and information about the Morse letter.
