The diagnosis of reasoning in the mentally Retarted

The application of Piaget's theory of cognitive development to the assessment of mental ability of the mentally retarded is presented. Following a discussion of developmental theories and diagnosis of mental development, testing interviews demonstrate the limits of cognitive thought at each of three stages. Abnormal intellectual oscillations are described in terms of progressive reasoning, the true oscillations, retrogressive reasoning, and abnormal decalages. Conclusions are discussed for the following: the genetic diagnosis of reasoning, clinical indices of mental deficiency, and deficiencies in reasoning and the theory of development. Appendixes give descriptive data on the 159 subjects and practical directions for testing in the clinical method. An 88-item bibliography is included. (Le).
