Returns to education in Bogota, Colombia

The traditional method for measuring the private benefit from the enhanced productive capacity attributed to more education overstates the private benefit. Alternative measures are explored in this study that under certain circumstances are conceptually superior to the traditional method. The private rate of return to various levels of education in Colombia are estimated using both measures of the benefit for men and women in the Bogota labor force in 1965. The average public costs of schooling per student-year are estimated and are added to the private costs to estimate a 'partial' social rate of return to schooling in Colombia. (Author).
