  • "Lawyer and former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp describes the successes that women have achieved over 40 years in terms of employment and academic achievement and discusses reasons why women may not feel like cheering despite these successes, based on her own experiences. She offers some new rules for feminism, based on three principles: 1) that women must be liberated from false expectations; 2) that women must be liberated from unfair judgements ; 3) that women must be free to live in the real world. Rather than focusing on "having it all", women should focus on the "it", and what that "it" is that women want in the real world, given the reality of limits in life in terms of the 24-hour day and the false premise of the idea of "we can have everything our heart desires", which can lead to unattainable expectations. If you want to be perfect at everything you do, you need to do less. Women need to stop feeling guilty about what they may not have attained, acquired, or accomplished."
