  • "James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Sigourney Weaver. Weaver discusses her upbringing in New York City, the daughter of Elizabeth Inglis, a former actress and pioneering television executive Sylvester "Pat" L. Weaver; her education at private schools and at Stanford University, where she became involved in "guerilla theater"; her studies at Yale School of Drama; moving to back to New York City, where she performed in theatrical workshop productions and struggled to get her career off the ground; landing her leading role in the 1979 hit motion picture Alien; returning to work in the theater following that success in the 1984 Broadway success Hurlyburly by David Rabe, directed by Mike Nichols. Weaver examines her roles in such motion pictures as The year of living dangerously (1982), Ghost busters (1984), Une femme ou deux (1985), playing opposite Gérard Depardieu, Gorillas in the mist (1988), Working girl (1988), the Alien sequels Alien 3 (1992) and Alien: resurrection (1997), and Death and the maiden (1994), directed by Roman Polanski. Weaver elaborates on her preparation and approach to the latter role; being drawn to eccentric female characters; and her theory of acting. A brief question and answer session with Weaver and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program."
